The Spirit of Tulita
By Dr. Nubia Huete
Gertrude Mendez Ruiz is a well-known character in Boaco, Nicaragua, where those who know her remember her as a happy young woman who went everywhere with her father, who was a traditional dancer. When she was not traveling with him, she dedicated herself to washing and ironing clothes for many homes in the city of Boaco.
She became a very popular person in Boaco due to her always-happy spirit and the vibrant way she dressed – always in bright clothes, with a sombrero. She marched in the parades of Santiago and for national holidays, and earned the nickname “Tulita.” Eight years ago, Tulita entered the local nursing home for seniors.
Tulita became a patient of Clinica Verde in 2012, when our staff visited the home for the first time. From the beginning until today we have been caring for Tulita, now more than ever. At 79 years old, she has many of the health problems linked with old age but she continues to be a warm and engaging, ever the bright light she has always been.
We are honored to serve her.
Dr. Nubia Huete has been a primary care physician at Clinica Verde since we opened in 2012.
