Internship Program

Clinica Verde has partnered with the University of Alabama at Birmingham to offer a Human Rights Professional Internship program. This remote global internship offers experiential learning activities designed to provide opportunities to make connections between the theory and practice of academic study and the practical application of that study in a professional work environment. Selected students interact with the Clinica Verde staff in Nicaragua and expert speakers on relevant topics to learn about women's rights and women's health issues, and develop programs and educational initiatives while getting hands-on experience with human rights advocacy.

“My experience at Clinica Verde was educational, fun, and eye opening. It was surprising to see how close the community seemed with the clinic. The minimum payment model and access to health care provided by Clinica Verde showed me how compassionate a business could be in order to care for those in their community. I loved rounding with the different physicians, especially with the OB/Gyn doctor.”

— Dr. Daniel Amponsah was a student intern at Clinica Verde in 2013

My time at Clinica Verde changed my perspective while amplifying my existing thoughts on the importance of health education, understanding cultural backgrounds and empathy to one’s individual health and life circumstances as integral parts of treatment. I can’t help but implement the powerful things I learned and observed during my volunteer experience, not only into my future medical career, but as a compassionate human being.

"The time I’ve spent at the clinic has helped me become a better person all around and this trip has helped me create new friendships and strengthen old ones. I am extremely thankful that God has given me this opportunity to become a better and stronger person."

"If there’s one thing this trip has taught me, it’s to be grateful. One of the things I have done while working at the clinic is take surveys on the patients’ experience in the clinic. Through this, I’ve come to see the clinic through their eyes. In a world where doctors have to bring their own soap if they want to wash their hands, women are not respected, and people are educated to a level that would be considered barely functional by society in the United States. Clinica Verde is amazing."

-Helena Herber, 2012

“The clinic surveys gave me an opportunity to see the clinic’s message unfold within these women ... empowered by the message of the clinic and its mission, excited by their newfound respect and discovered voice. It was those women who I wanted to sit with and talk to for hours."

-Camille Sacristan, 2012
