Biointensive Gardening

Clinica Verde addresses malnutrition and food security through our bio-intensive garden, a hand-on teaching tool for our patients. More than 29% of children in Nicaragua suffer some degree of under-nutrition. Malnourishment is a more significant problem in rural areas, where 37% of children are malnourished. Geographic and climate conditions also have a negative impact, as does lack of knowledge about the environmental crisis. Clinica Verde's comprehensive educational program around nutrition education targets rural low-income families, addressing food security and introducing new methodologies for that protect the environment. Through this program, we distribute seeds and teach families and school children how to create their own home gardens with nutrient-rich produce.

Clinica Verde has implemented the bio-intensive methodology since 2015, using an evidence-based curriculum that emphasizes nutrition and the bio-intensive production of vegetables with high-caloric content. One of the project goals is to help families in poor conditions utilize the resources around them to ensure proper nutrition from food they can easily produce in the home setting. This program is also integrated with our Prenatal Nutrition Program for pregnant mothers.

Taking care of our health is in our hands. It’s important to eat food that is clean and healthy, and we can cultivate this food by ourselves.
